Frequently asked questions about the F309 & FS309
Everything you need to know before buying, setting up, or troubleshooting your Lenovo portable external hard drive.
What is the Lenovo F309 / FS309?
The Lenovo F309 and FS309 are 2.5-inch portable external hard drives designed for everyday backup, file transfer, and expanded storage. They use a standard USB 3.0 / USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface, run at 5400 RPM, and are fully bus-powered — meaning no external power adapter is required.
What is the difference between F309 and FS309?
The F309 and FS309 are built on the same internal platform and deliver identical performance. The only real difference between the two models is the outer shell material — and the level of physical protection that comes with it.
What is identical on both models:
- Form factor: 2.5-inch portable external hard drive
- Interface: USB 3.0 / USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.2 Gen 1), up to 5 Gbps
- Spindle speed: 5400 RPM
- Capacities: 500 GB · 1 TB · 2 TB
- Real-world speed: ~80–120 MB/s on USB 3.0
- Power: Fully bus-powered — no external adapter required
- Plug & play: No drivers needed — works on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android (OTG)
- Internal protection: 3D shock absorption (rubber cushions + air gap over the motor)
- File system: NTFS by default, reformattable to exFAT / FAT32
- Warranty: 1–3 years, region dependent
What is different:
- Lenovo F309 — uses a lightweight ABS high-strength engineering plastic shell. It is the lighter and more affordable option, protected by the standard 3D shock absorption system. Perfect for everyday carry.
- Lenovo FS309 — uses a stronger aluminum alloy shell. This gives the drive higher impact resistance, better pressure and twist protection, and improved heat dissipation (the aluminum acts as a heat sink). It also has a more premium metal feel — at a slightly higher price.
In short: same drive, different shell. If you want maximum durability choose the FS309; if you want the lowest price choose the F309. Both deliver the same capacity, speed, and features.
Which capacities are available?
The series is available in three consumer capacities:
- 500 GB — ideal for documents and light backups
- 1 TB — the most popular choice for photos, music, and office files
- 2 TB — best for video projects, large archives, and full system backups

Bundle contents may vary slightly by region and retailer.
Is this drive suitable for gaming consoles (PS4 / PS5 / Xbox)?
Yes — with conditions. The drive can be connected to a PS4, PS5, or Xbox for storing games and media. However, because it is a 5400 RPM mechanical drive, load times for games will be noticeably slower than an SSD. For external game storage (not running games directly), it works well.
What is the real-world transfer speed?
Real-world performance depends on the host port:
- USB 3.0 port: ~80–120 MB/s sequential read/write
- USB 2.0 port: ~30–40 MB/s (limited by the port, not the drive)
Small files (thousands of photos, source code, documents) transfer slower than large files because of the 5400 RPM mechanical design.
Does it support USB 3.1 Gen 1 or only USB 3.0?
Both terms refer to the same 5 Gbps interface. USB 3.1 Gen 1 was the marketing rename of USB 3.0 by the USB-IF, and later renamed again to USB 3.2 Gen 1. The Lenovo F309 / FS309 fully supports all three labels because they describe identical hardware.
Will it work faster on a USB-C port?
Only if the USB-C port supports USB 3.x speeds. Plugging the drive into a USB-C port via an adapter does not increase speed — the drive itself is capped at 5 Gbps, and the 5400 RPM mechanical disk is the real bottleneck (~100 MB/s). A USB-C connection provides convenience, not extra speed.
Is 5400 RPM fast enough for 4K video editing?
For editing directly from the drive, no. 4K multi-stream editing requires an SSD (or RAID) for smooth playback. However, the F309 / FS309 is perfectly fine as a cold storage or archive drive for finished 4K projects.
Which operating systems are supported?
- Windows XP SP3 / Vista / 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10 / 11
- macOS 10.6+ (via adapter or USB-A port)
- Linux (kernel 2.6+ with USB mass storage support)
- Android (via USB OTG, on supported devices)
Does it work with macOS, Linux, and Android?
Yes. The drive uses the universal USB Mass Storage protocol, which every major OS supports natively. Note: the drive ships formatted as NTFS, which macOS can read but not write to without extra software. To use it across Windows and macOS, reformat it as exFAT.
Will it work with Windows 11?
Yes. Windows 11 recognizes the drive instantly with no drivers required. If you see a “This PC can’t read this drive” prompt, it’s usually a file-system or partition issue — not a compatibility problem.
Does it need external power?
No. The drive is fully bus-powered over USB. There is no DC jack, no power brick, and no wall adapter. This is one of its biggest advantages for travel.
How does the 3D shock protection work?
Lenovo uses a three-layer protection design inside the F309 / FS309:
- Rubber cushioning around the disk frame absorbs lateral impacts
- Air gap over the motor reduces vibration transfer
- ABS high-strength shell protects against external pressure
This does not mean the drive is drop-proof. It is designed to survive the bumps and knocks of daily carry — not a fall from a table while powered on.
Is the data encrypted?
No hardware encryption is included. If you need encryption, use BitLocker (Windows Pro), FileVault (macOS), or a third-party tool such as VeraCrypt. Encrypting the volume will slightly reduce transfer speeds.
What happens if the drive is dropped while running?
Dropping a mechanical drive during operation is the most dangerous scenario for its platters and heads. The 3D protection reduces risk but cannot eliminate it. If it happens:
- Disconnect the drive immediately.
- Do not shake or open it.
- Reconnect and run a diagnostic tool (e.g. CrystalDiskInfo).
- If files are unreadable, stop using the drive and consult data recovery.
How long will the drive last?
Typical 2.5-inch mechanical drives last 3–5 years in regular use, depending on workload and handling. For important data, always keep at least two copies (e.g. one on the F309 and one in cloud storage or on another drive).
Is it plug-and-play?
Yes. Plug the USB cable into your computer and the drive appears within seconds. No drivers, no software, no setup wizard.
Do I need to format the drive before use?
No — it is pre-formatted. However, if you plan to use the drive on both Windows and macOS, you should reformat it to exFAT. If you will only use it on Windows, leave it as NTFS.
How do I safely eject the drive?
- Windows: click the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon in the system tray → select the drive → wait for the confirmation message.
- macOS: drag the drive icon to the Trash, or press ⌘E in Finder.
- Linux: right-click the mounted drive → “Safely Remove” or run
udisksctl unmount -b /dev/sdX1.
Never unplug the drive while data is being written — this can corrupt the file system.
Can I use it as a bootable drive?
Technically yes, but it is not recommended for daily booting. Mechanical drives are much slower than SSDs for OS operation. For a bootable external OS, use an SSD.
What file system does it come with?
Drives ship formatted as NTFS (Windows default). To use on both Windows and macOS without extra software, reformat as exFAT.
What is the warranty period?
Warranty terms vary by region and seller. In most markets, the F309 / FS309 series is covered by a 1-year or 3-year limited hardware warranty. Check the product listing or the warranty card inside the box for the exact terms in your country.
How do I claim warranty service?
- Locate your proof of purchase (invoice or order confirmation).
- Note the serial number printed on the drive label.
- Contact your seller or the Lenovo support channel in your region.
- Describe the fault and provide the serial number and purchase proof.
Warranty does not cover physical damage, water damage, or data loss.
Where can I buy genuine Lenovo F309 / FS309 drives?
Purchase from authorized Lenovo resellers, official Lenovo stores, or reputable marketplaces. Avoid unusually cheap listings — counterfeit portable drives are common on third-party marketplaces.
